Traunsee – The Tradition of the Summer Escape

Whereas the Attersee region started to develop after the rise of bourgeoisie, the Traunsee region didn’t follow suit until the early 1800s, when members of the Austrian and international aristocracy began to form something of a summer clique. Fleeing the city for the coolness of the Austrian countryside was a trend initiated by the imperial family, and the picturesque landscape of the Traunsee provided the perfect setting for this kind of summer retreat.

How did the aristocracy, merchant families and artists spend their summers in Gmunden, Altmünster, Traunkirchen or Ebensee? How did the famous Ringstrassen architecture get to the Traunsee? What kind of leisure culture united the summer clique? This book delves into these questions and much more.
